We highly recommend to use vector designs. There are situations that BMP files are just better.

Complete Answer:

Use Vector files as often as possible. A DXF file from AutoCAD 2000 is my preferrence. If using a BMP file, you need to ensure the file is monochrome.

For engraving photogrphs, use PhotoGrav software to convert the photo.
